All require internships, residency is required if you want to be recognized by anyone in the medical field, and malpractice is required if you want to practice in the real world. No hospital or medical facility will give you any admitting rights or courtesy staff priv. if you do not carry whatever their minimum requirements are. And besides, NOT carrying insurance is just not very smart considering all the investment a doctor has in his career.

As far as I am aware malpractice insurance is required in all medical fields. I currently am employed for a large optometrist office and we are required to carry malpractice insurance. If you are going to be seeing patients with insurance it is required by the insurance companies.

You don't have to carry malpractice insurance if you do not mind getting sued for everything you own. All doctors run the risk of being sued, same is true for nurses and many other medical professionals. It is in your best interest (and in your families best interest) that you carry malpractice insurance, so that you do not wind up losing your home and everything you own if you wind up in a malpractice suit. Malpractice suits happen to even the best doctors.

Residency is required for all doctors. There is a lot to learn. You need to study hard during med-school, then apply what you have learned in your residency, before you are an independent physician.
